The mottoes of a demonstration, which was held on January 30 in Frankfurt am Main, were “Everything for Everyone. Social Revolution Now!”, “For the radical democratization of all areas of life!” and “Free Education for Everyone!”. Germany’s radical student’s movement, antifascist groups and the syndicalist union FAU mobilised themselves for it. Around 3000 people joined the demonstration that was dominated by a huge black block of around 1000 people walking in the frontlines of the demonstration. Massive police forces escorted the demonstration and randomly used pepper spray and clubs against the peaceful crowd. In fact, the whole demonstration was encircled by armoured policemen and women; this is called a “Wanderkessel” in German. Special units filmed everything and portrayed individual persons with cameras. At least, the police were not allowed to step on university ground, where the demonstration started and ended.

The demonstration was supposed to begin at 2:00 o’clock but the demonstration’s start was delayed because busses with protesters had been stopped and controlled. After these people finally reached the KOZ, a cultural centre and café at Frankfurt’s university campus, spokesmen and women of the free education movement, local antifascist groups and the unions GEW and FAU held speeches from a truck. The topics of their speeches ranged from free education to the present struggles of the FAU union, who is in danger of being prohibited by German courts. Most of these speakers related to the violent clearing of an occupied university building at the end of last year; this was also a crucial reason for this event. During the speeches, heavy snowfall accompanied the scenery, so that most people gathered nearby in the building but went out when around 3:00 the demonstration began.

As soon as the demonstration left the university campus, policemen and women stood close to the demonstrators who had bound banners together and held them to the sides, so that people outside the demonstration were informed about their reasons for this event. But any hope of making an impression on people outside was impossible due to the enormous amount of police around the demonstration. It may have been half an hour after we have left university, when people walking in front ran back because they had been injured by pepper spray. Some policemen were in favour of violence and insulted the demonstrators during the entire time.

After three hours, we reached the KOZ again. It had been cold and people were exhausted from the walk. The conclusions which can be drawn from this day are: The postfascist German state is doing everything possible to suppress the student’s movement; capitalism is afraid of a unity between workers, students and pupils, who formed the demonstration. But despite state violence, our struggle will continue.
